A 31 year old with cerebral palsy strives to become a samurai.
M has strong teeth and good genes. He broke his hand last week and, if you ask nicely, he’ll brag about breaking his nephew’s arm. He believes he is the center of the universe
M has dysarthria and generalized dystonia. That means his muscles don’t stretch and sometimes his brain says they’re on fire. He’s a Mexican immigrant, a philosopher, and a self-described monster. One time his girlfriend gave him fleas.
This film begins at the edge of California farm country in a bleak bedroom lit by a single, dirty window. M is attending college, taking classes he considers below his intellectual acumen. When he loses even that, his life becomes a revolving door of television and video games where nights seem like days and days are endless. Through a fragmented series of attempts over many years, M grapples with autonomy and adulthood - what they can really be, and what they really should.
M’s story is one where triumph is in the trying. He struggles to finish college, wrestle with citizenship, and become a warrior capable of protecting the people he loves. He is a chaotic representative of the unseen and the unknown. This film is his mouthpiece.
